The APA Board of Directors is composed of industry and association volunteers. These individuals are not corporate insurance executives, but are your industry peers — fellow financial advisors who donate their time and apply their years of industry expertise to the strategic management of your membership association.
Roger McMillan, who came to Canada from England in 1956, graduated from the University of Toronto, majoring in Economics.
A member of LUAC/CAIFA since 1972, he is a past president of the Toronto chapter (1993), and served on various national committees as well as on the Advocis Board of Directors during the merger of CAIFA and CAFP. Roger, who is also a member of CALU, is currently on the Members Services Committee and Chair of the Best Practices sub-committee. He represents Advocis on the OSC Fair Dealing Model sub-committee.

Brian commenced his business career in 1970 with National Drug and Chemical as a Cost Accountant. In November 1973, he became associated with The Canada Life Assurance Company as an individual insurance representative, and completed the Career Agent's Training Course in September 1974. He obtained the Chartered Life Underwriters (CLU) designation in May of 1979. Brian attained the Chartered Financial Consultant (Ch.F.C.) designation in 1989, the first year the designation was offered in Canada. In 1995, he attained the Registered Financial Planner (RFP) designation, and in 1997, the Certified Financial Planners designation (CFP). Brian maintains both a mutual funds license and insurance license.
In 1980, Brian founded Dataplan Consulting Associates Ltd. The firm changed its name in 1987 to Dataplan Financial Services Ltd. in response to their increasing scope in financial services. In September of 1996, he finalized the sale of the Dataplan Group of Companies to Assante Capital Management. He held the position of Chief Executive Officer and President until June of 1998 when the Dataplan Group of Companies merged with Equion Financial of Toronto, a subsidiary of Assante Capital Management. Following the merger he formed Brian Mallard & Associates, a financial planning services company. Initially the firm provided that service to approximately 250 client families representing $40 million of assets under management. The firm has grown to 10 financial planners, 12 staff, over 4000 client families, and $400 million of assets under management.
Jim has been a member of Advocis since 1992. He started his business career as an articling student with Coopers and Lybrand in 1981 and became a Chartered Accountant in 1984. Shortly after receiving his CA designation he left public accounting and joined the financial services industry. Throughout the next 10 years he held various positions with Trust companies and Life Insurance companies, including Senior VP, Finance and Regional VP, Distribution. In 1995 he became an independent insurance advisor in Calgary. During this period he continued to further his education and in 1997 obtained the CLU designation and in 1998 the CFP designation. In 2000 he transitioned from an independent insurance advisor and purchased his first MGA in Calgary. Also in that year he joined the board of the local Advocis chapter, and in 2008 and 2009 served as the Chapter President. He also served on the Board of the Advocis Protection Association in 2007. He joined the board of The Institute in 2010, and is the outgoing Chair.
Since purchasing his first MGA in 2000, he has built the organization through a series of mergers and acquisitions into a national MGA with 11 offices from coast to coast. In 2010 his firm become associated with PPI, and was renamed PPI Solutions Inc. He continues to be the President and CEO of PPI Solutions Inc.
Jim strongly believes in the value that independent financial advisors bring to Canadians, and that Advocis is the only voice that truly understands and addresses their concerns. Jim lives in Calgary with his wife Barb and has two children attending university.
Geoffrey Hull graduated from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1984 with an honours B.A.S. and joined Advocis the following year in 1985. He is has been a member of RIBO since 1985 and is a founding member of CALU. Geoffrey is president of Hull Life Ltd and has over 30 years Qualifying & Life member of MDRT. An avid golfer, Geoffrey also enjoys hockey and holds his commercial pilot's license.
Edward T. McQuillan attended McGill University and following in his father’s footsteps, entered the insurance industry in 1998. Edward is a dedicated member of various industry associations, such as Advocis and CALU. He is a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Edward is very passionate about his charity work and is a current board member of the Kensington Gardens and Circle 21.
After years in the Canadian military and later working overseas, Vince started in the life insurance industry working closely with his late father in law, Harold Wiffen. It was during Harold's illness that Vince realized his passion for helping people to ensure that their financial affairs were structured to reach their retirement and estate goals.
Vince is currently the President of Advocis Vancouver chapter, past chair of Gama Vancouver and currently sits on the Advocis Protective Association board. During his 14 years in the industry, Vince demonstrates his values by advocating for the needs of not just his clients but also for his colleagues in the industry. "A stronger future for our clients begins with stronger advisors in the industry; I champion that through my actions with Advocis".
After over 28 years in financial services, Dennis founded YourLegacy.ca in response to a growing need he observed among his clients and friends. Having provided personal financial advice to hundreds of clients over the years, Dennis realized that beyond a certain point, most people shifted their focus from simple financial concerns to creating greater significance in their lives. He felt the time had come for a different kind of financial planning. He envisioned an approach based on core values that focused on creating meaning.
Dennis was Waterloo Life Underwriters County Agent of the Year 1989 and Past President. He has 25 years of service on the Government Relations Committee of Advocis. He has directed interaction with a series of Federal Finance Ministers - including Paul Martin and Marc Lalonde and is a highly regarded professional speaker.
